To quickly end the war: Despite the serious losses, Japan refused to incur. The United States believed that Japan's land invasion  would cost millions of people living in America and Japan. 2. To demonstrate the power of the Soviet Union: The United States wanted to demonstrate its nuclear power to the Soviet Union, which became its future rivals in the Cold War.  3. Revenge for the attack on Pearl Harbor: The United States wanted to punish Japan for a surprising attack on Pearl Harbor. 4. To avoid more casualties: The soil invasion in Japan, known as a downfall operation, was estimated to have caused the deaths of 1 million American soldiers and millions of Japanese civilians. ---  Hiroshima bombing (August 6, 1945): The US dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima called "Little Boy."
