Disaster in Switzerland and Italy

The latest events in Switzerland and Italy highlight the region's sensitivity to natural disasters and environmental challenges. Avalanches in the Piedmont region of Italy In January 2025, an avalanche was attacked by a group of five skiers from Italy's Piedmont region near the Swiss border. The incident occurred on the east side of Punta Bar Grande, leading to the deaths of three people. The skiers were worn several hundred metres downhill, and  two survivors were taken to  hospital for treatment. Before the event, authorities in the area over 2,100 metres had issued warnings about the substantial risk of an avalanche. Reconstruction of melted glaciers and boundary The rapid withdrawal of glaciers due to climate change forced Switzerland and Italy to redraw parts of the alpine border, particularly for Matterhon. This adaptation affected important areas, including the Zermatt ski area. The Joint Committee reached the agreement in May 2023, with Switzerland officially approving the agreement, but Italian consent is still pending. In 2023 alone, Swiss glaciers lost 4% of their volume, highlighting the urgent impact of climate change on European natural landscapes. Historical background: A terrifying winter Historically, the Alps have experienced difficult natural disasters. The winter of 1951, known as the 1951 "Winter of Terrorism," saw an unprecedented number of avalanches occurring in Switzerland, Austria and Italy. During this period, an avalanche of 649 people was carried out, resulting in more than 265 deaths and comprehensive damage to the infrastructure. These events highlight  ongoing challenges representing natural disasters and environmental changes in the alpine regions of Switzerland and Italy.
