McCann's acting career took off with a memorable role in a television advertisement for Scott's Porage Oats, where he appeared wearing a kilt. His breakthrough performance came in 2002 when he starred in The Book Group, earning critical acclaim and a Scottish BAFTA.

Beyond Game of Thrones, McCann has taken on roles in films such as Hot Fuzz, where he played a menacing supermarket employee, and Jumanji: The Next Level, appearing as the villain Jurgen the Brutal. Standing at an imposing 6'6", McCann is also musically talented—he plays several instruments and enjoys singing. Despite his fame, he leads a relatively private life and often spends time in the Scottish Highland.
